They did not have any way to measure if the online chatter actually influenced more sales, but as a prediction of sales numbers, it turned out to be an excellent gauge.

Indie Entertainers Make the Perfect Media Pitch

Indie entertainers today are a lucky bunch! Thanks to the plethora of cheap technology a Press Kit can be put together for next to nothing and nicely mailed off to every ilk of media.

However too often indie entertainers think a slick Press Kit is all that is needed to get the attention of an inundated reporter. Unlike the major companies who have the power of brand to get into just about any publication, the indie entertainer MUST cater to the needs of the media. Remember they do not need you, unless your story will add to the quality of their publication. This in the publisher’s mind equals higher circulation and/or ad revenue.

Indie entertainers need to save the cost of mailing the kit and focus on the pitch letter. The pitch letter outlines why a publication SHOULD write about your product. A pitch letter introduces the product and why the publications readers would be interested. Then if the publication is interested a press kit and other subsequent materials can be submitted.

Getting to New York

I
f you decide to come by plane, travel with a group! Traveling with a certain number of passengers can get you a nice group rate discount, same with hotel lodging check with your airline and/or travel agents for details.

Lodging

W
hy not plan on spending a couple of weeks in New York? Check out craigslist New York: http://newyork.craigslist.org/ for some innovative and affordable ways to stay cheap in the city. Also do not rule out staying in the outer boroughs (The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island) for affordable accommodations.

The New York City Mass Transit Authority is one of the most organized transportations systems on the planet and can pretty much take you all over the city: http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/. But be mindful where you choose to stay. New York City does have its not so nice areas and while crime has decreased it is still necessary to do your research.

Coming from Abroad

I
f you are planning on attending a film festival you may need a visa. Since September 11, 2001 United States Government has been very particular about visitors and visas. To avoid jeopardizing a future visit to the United States you should consult your local US Embassy http://usembassy.state.gov/ and visit these State Department websites: http://travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.html and http://www.unitedstatesvisas.gov/ for the proper documentation you need to enter the United States.
