This was the game I anticipated since the PS2 was announced. I heard the environment was fully interactive and there would be so much happening on the screen at once that as a player I would sucked into the game and never want to leave. Oh, how I wanted this game and how I was happy to get it when I did. I didn't even read the reviews to learn about what others thought. I knew Squaresoft was just so awesome that they wouldn't let a horrible game enter our homes. Too bad I was dead wrong.
The story takes place when Dominique, a young girl found by a bar bouncer named Sion, is abducted by the Mikado Special Forces. Mikado, is a major corporation, that abducts the girl in search of what they believe are secrets she holds. So Sion and his two buddies set out to find her and battle everyone that gets in their way.
Now that you know the story, here are the good and bad points of the game. Notice how the bad points outweigh the good:
Good: The graphics are fantastic and really capture the dark feel of this game. The game has great music, which makes up for the lack of action. You fight as a team like in Streets of Rage or Double Dragon game, which made this game a lot of fun to play. The versus mode is cool and the survival competition mode is phat. In fact, that is the best part of the game. Those seem like some really good points, but believe me the bad aspects just kill this game.
Bad: The players move too slow. There isn't much for the characters to do and every time I beat a group of characters (like a group of three), there was some cut scene that killed my flow. Why have cut scenes if you are going to have horrible dialogue? There was not much for me to do at all in this game. I might as well let the computer just play movies. What was promised was not what I got received, the environment was not interactive and the characters weren't all that special. I didn't even bother finishing it.
Badseed's Bottomline: 5 out of 10. This game is beautiful and I could give it a lower score but I had a whole lot of fun playing the Survivor mode. I liked the game for what it could have been and the use of the Double Dragon style for the PS2. But this is a rental at best not something to spend a significant portion of your pay on.
