     RG Veda (pronounced "Rig") is
based on the break through manga series by the popular Female Manga-ka team CLAMP, renowned for series such X (X/1999), Tokyo Babylon, and Card Captor Sakura (Cardcaptors).
RG Veda is loosely based on stories and characters from the oldest and most sacred Hindu text of poems and prayers of the same name. So right there you know this story is interesting, especially for nerds like myself who love history and studying world religions and spirituality.
The story revolves around a girl named Ashura, who is destined to right the wrongs of the past. She accompanied by three former rulers of god clans that have become extinct, Yasha, Ashura's sworn protector, Ryu, a boy king, and Karura, a mystical woman with ability to create phantom cranes with great power. Together these individuals have set out to overthrow Taishakuten, the god, who murdered and killed many gods, including Ashura's Father, in order to control heaven.
In typical CLAMP style characters are romantically drawn with long flowing robes, hair, and pretty male characters. The story itself is also typically CLAMP, plenty of drama, action, and violence to appeal to both female and male readers alike. In other words it's a damn good soap opera with edge.
In this volume of the OAV Ashura meets her mother who tried to kill her when the leader of the gods killed her father Ashura-ou. Like in X, the zodiac and predestination play an important role in righting the wrongs of the past.
I definitely suggest seeing the first volume before partaking in this volume; otherwise you will be lost (which I saw many moons ago and cannot remember). Too much story with very little explanation, characters and relationships were coming at me at every which way. BUT despite the fact that I was lost, the story intrigued me to want to know more.
Those familiar with CLAMP's other works know their ability to create oft-complex relationship, which can make anyone, despite where they begin in any of their series, become addicted. I am particularly interested in how the Ashura and her companions came together. I will definitely purchase the first OAV in order to get myself in check.
What is sad about this series is that it is only comprised of two OAVs. Which means after viewing this volume you will be very thirsty for more, with nothing to quench your thirst. Your only bet is to view the original manga series. Oh what a life for anime and manga fans! Will someone pleas save us?!
