Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an encyclopedic dictionary on the known magical creatures to inhabit the world. Muggles (Non-Magical People) will be familiar with some of the creatures discussed, which include dragons, Nessie, also known as the Lochness Monster, and merpeople; who actually are as diverse in appearance as humans and inhabit many aquatic environments.

Scamander's thoroughness explaining and identifying each creature, leaves no one to wonder why this book is MUST for magical peoples (the book of course is Fiction, and even if it was not, could only be found in the magic shops). Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has extensive footnotes which provide an excellent insight on how these creatures behave with actual accounts of witch and wizard encounters and are an excellent source for those wishing to learn more about a particular creature.

But what makes this particular book so interesting is that it is said to be the actual book used by the famous wizard Harry Potter, who was thrusted in fame by the Muggle, J.K. Rowling, a distinguished witch in her own right. Throughout the book are notes not only from young Master Potter, but apparently from his friends as well.

The only thing that would have made this book much more interesting would have been the inclusion of pictures. There were a few diagrams, but I guess due to the fact that many Muggle readers might go and attempt to seek the creatures, efforts to protect the beasts led Scamander to leave out pictures.

All in all, it is a great book and any fan of the Potter series should indeed purchase this book. Be sure to read the synopsis of the magic book Quidditch through the Ages.
