Jazz, R&B, soul, rock and lousy lyrics, sum up the tracks on the self-entitled, twelve track CD, by the Dada Spots. It is a sad fate when such great toe tapping, head bopping music is destroyed by nonsensical lyrics.
The music on this CD was really good. It was diverse, it flowed, and it was solid in every way. But the lyrics made no sense. I understand the Dada Spots are crate bebop, scat, jazz type of sound, but the words were, for lack of a better word, corny. Songs like Tummy Ache, Jelly Roll, and My Little Boat were just stupid.
There was one song on the CD that did catch my ear, The Wedding Song. This spoken word piece about a man, his wife and a robbery in process was a creative, though strange tale, about a man being robbed on his wedding night. The piece is done in such a matter of fact tone that comes out comical yet profound, making it one of those songs you cannot help but fall in love with. The music behind it flows with the story as if it were a visual piece. To me it was the best song on the album.
But overall I was not impressed with the CD; if this CD had been solely instrumental in nature I would have given it a much better review. I do suggest however that you hear the Wedding Song; I guarantee you will find yourself actually speaking-er-singing it too.
