In a world where it is just too damn easy to download music, DVDs are
the best alternative for a musician trying to get his, her or group's quality work to the masses. Ever try to download a video? It's never as good as a real DVD, so it makes sense for artists to try and get noticed with this medium.
People may have heard of The Alkaholiks, but not necessarily their music. Maybe it is because it is not mainstream enough? But despite not getting too much radio play, the group has a loyal cult following that enjoys the music, the anthems, the wild partying and the crazy concerts that is almost guaranteed at each and every Alkaholiks performance.
The X.O. The Movie Experience was released to coincide with the release of their album of the same name. With this movie, The Alkaholiks or simply Tha Liks have released an awesome 83-minute ride into their lives, including concert footage, low-budget videos (the kind that bring Hip Hop fans back to the days of old), backstage access, original freestyles, skits, interviews and more!
Almost every Alkaholiks song has to do with drinking and right from the beginning, viewers are thrust into a 200-proof performance featuring a sampling of Farside's She Keeps on Passing Me By, including a series of pulse-pounding beats that will have any music lover's head bobbing. Mouths will also drop as women rush onto the stage and with the encouragement of The Alkaholiks, take off their tops and flash those boobs! Who knew rap concerts could be so cool? Who also knew that you could rap so much about drinking alcohol and make it so entertaining?
I put the bottle to your lips, when I sip, you sip, we sip. - [performed to the same tune of Freak Nasty's Da Dip]
X.O. The Movie Experience is a perfect introduction to this Hip Hop act with just about every song on the DVD entertaining and fun enough to make those who haven't picked up an Alkaholiks CD, curious enough to check them out. And those who already have the CD's will be entertained by a group that knows how to keep a party going from one track to the next. These guys are no one-trick ponies. They show a vast amount of intelligence to come up with their lyrics. These guys spit better than most mainstream performers and yet, they keep that underground feel despite being a little more on the radar than most cult acts. Their freestyle skills alone are a reason alone to check this group out, and prove that they can match up with just about anyone.
X.O. the Movie Experience is loaded with tons of extras such as a guest appearance by Xzibit. X to the Z is the man and his presence just beefs up the legitimacy of a group like the Alkaholiks. He just pimps their ride, making the journey that much more appealing to the viewer. Of course, these guys can entertain on their own, evident by a hilarious skit where the members of the band stand right in front of a banner of their likenesses and wait to see if any girls recognize them. From 11:45 p.m. to 4:15 a.m. a 24-like clock ticker goes off and the band laughs at the fact that they get no love; almost playing up to the fact that they are known and at the same time unknown. They also perform a hilarious parody of those basketball dribbling Nike commercials.
While the X.O. The Movie Experience itself is grainy and somewhat distorted and amateur, it is still perfect, because it fits The Alkaholiks style giving the viewer that buzzed feel, as they get drunk from the music. This is a DVD worth watching, so grab a 40 oz., sit back and become an Alkaholik!
