Genre: Experimental Hip Hop

Sound manipulation is an art. Many studios use sound manipulation as a backdrop for mainstream artists but few actually promote the sound DJ DREZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVEDmanipulator. DJ Drez defies that truth. In his CD, The Capture of Sound, D.J. Drez proves himself worthy of the title artist despite the normally unrecognized nature of his art. Throughout 23 complete tracks, Drez weaves a look into the mind of a man with interesting ideas and a complex view of the world. It's an interesting journey and one I didn't mind following him on.

D.J. Drez has an offbeat style. Blending beats ranging from Jazz to Hip Hop and R&B, audio clips of sentences and random noises, Drez holds his own, creating masterpiece after masterpiece. Joining him were a bevy of artists who supply their vocal stylings to his unique backbeats. In some cases, the vocal guests detract from the beauty of Drez's creations and in some cases, they add to the unique quality of his message. In pieces such as The Prescription and Information Overload the vocal parts are used to put forth a message that it seems Drez holds close to his heart-that things in this world are not the way they ought to be-a message I think we can all relate to during these rough times.

Throughout my time listening to this CD my feelings for it changed. While at the beginning I found myself intrigued and hungry for more of this strange and new musical concept, as the CD wore on I began to get a bit bored with it. This is not to say anything negative towards D.J. Drez or his talent. Rather, I think it says something about me-this is not truly my type of music. For me, while Drez stylings tapped into the part of my brain that's always looking for something new, the fast paced New Yorker in me seemed to reject the calming effect the songs had on me. I regret to admit that the CD actually lulled me into quite a good sleep. The only true complaint I have about the CD isn't really a complaint. This may not apply to everyone, but I felt the CD dragged on a bit too long, so I feel it probably should have been a few tracks shorter.

he Capture of Sound by D.J. Drez was a journey of discovery. On it, I learned that there is music that is not for me, but is still enjoyable. I learned that apparently I don't like to relax, but I became aware that it is possible to relax without Yoga style tones. Drez's mellow hip-hop style did quite well in that category. Drez is a skillful artist and not one that should be taken lightly. His beats are well created and I have great hopes of him becoming even more successful in time. Hopefully, next time, his CD is the usual 15 tracks. For my type of fan, smaller doses are needed.
