Island takes place on Cheju Island, off the coast of Korea, which from first impressions looks like a tropical paradise filled with beautiful forests and gorgeous villages, so being sent there would be a good thing, right? Wrong! Won Miho is sent there to teach and seems happy to do so, until she learns the dark secret of the island.
Cheju Island is a place where demons and gods plague human kind, killing those in their path without so much as a hint of hesitation. Miho becomes their next target if not for the mysterious Samaritin Pan.
Now, Miho must trust Pan to save her from the demons whose mission it is to end her existence. With an enchanted knife and a mastery of magic, Pan seems up to the task, but there is just one thing Pan may be a serial killer!
I found Island to be fascinating. I especially liked the complexity of the characters, Pan is not a goody-goody, stereotypical hero; while Miho has to learn to stop being the pampered princess, if she is going to get through all this with her life intact.
I also found the plot elements to be intriguing, do you trust a killer who saves your life? The saying goes, ‘keep them on their toes,’ and Island definitely achieves that goal. Throw in some wonderful Korean folklore, dark and masterfully drawn art and you have a series worth checking out until the end.
Island may not be as well known as some of the other Manwha released as of late, but it is certainly worth checking out. You will never forget what you read, because on this island, you don’t get voted off; you go home in a body bag.
