I cannot get enough of a good basketball video game. NBA Street changed the industry with its fast paced street ball game. Now, Midway’s NBA Ballers takes it all one-step further. NBA Ballers is a real test of basketball might, as you compete one-on-one for the right to be considered the greatest basketball player in the world. No excuses, no blaming it on your teammate’s greed--in this game it all comes down to you.
Taking a cue from all the reality series out there, NBA Ballers’ story mode is called Rags to Riches. This mode features a player you create taking part in tournaments at such street ball landmarks like Rucker Park, playing street ball and NBA stars until you are the cream of the crop, winning the money, the fame, and the honeys.
Though similar to NBA Street on the surface, NBA Ballers is ten times better. First and foremost, NBA Ballers features the most realistic players in a basketball game to date. Shaq looks like Shaq, Marbury looks exactly like Marbury and so on. Second, the ball playing skills are top notch and realistic from every cross over dribble to every alley-oop, with a bonus few over the top unrealistic dunks thrown in for fun.
The intensity of NBA Ballers was so real, it brought me back to my days on the street courts when I was down by three with only 15 seconds left and I did not know if I should shoot three for the tie or go for the easy two and a quick steal. I also like the difficulty of the game. Whether it is changing the rules so that you have to win by keeping your opponent to five points or tearing down the rim or score within a five second shot clock, you just need to keep on playing and learn to adapt. However the piece de resistance was how the game concluded with a little one-on-one-on-one. Winning these games alone is worth the rush to purchase.
Finally, wins earn you cash. The more cool moves and victories you tally up, the richer ye shall become. With your new found social status comes new cars and clothes that make your baller stand out on the court for more than just his skills. Tournament wins will also earn you a new cut scenes that tell of the latest developments in your dramatic rise to stardom. Most importantly, your new found social rankings earn you new cool moves like legal goal tending, hot spots, pass to a friend and more! What was even cooler was the better your performance, the more videos, magazine covers were unlocked. The little bonuses never seemed to end, even after you beat the game. There are more treasures to unlock that add to the gaming experience leaving you wanting more.
