What is Saint Dragon? It’s a South African quartet consisting of three guitarists and a drummer who are looking to create a fan base across the globe. They have toured the local club scene and managed to get themselves on the Chicago Underground Music Magazine’s Bands to Watch list. But who are they really? Well, after listening to Direct Hit, I think they’re Simple Plan wannabes. Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh, but that’s the vibe I’m getting from track one through track 10. It’s a raw sort of Simple Plan knock-off. I’m not saying that they are horrible, but Saint Dragon could use a little polishing.
Saint Dragon are most definitely geared toward a younger crowd. There are tracks about supermodels, love unseen, characters from Robotech…there’s even one about Avril Levigne.
I'm a lyrics person at heart. I love music in general, but I’m a sucker for a really good set of lyrics! Unfortunately with lyrics like those found in Last Song...
We could be lovers with sweet lullabies / Dancing through the fields with the deers under grey skies / I don’t wanna say you’re a liar but that’s what you are / And that’s why I threw you off the bus.
I was most definitely unimpressed. I did smile at Nintendo, a song devoted to Nintendo fans everywhere, but that was purely out of a sense of nostalgia. From the information packet the band sent, Nintendo is their most popular track, having been downloaded from their website quite often.
The website is fairly disappointing in its own right, with very little about the band itself and even less about their music. You can download their songs, but it takes a while. Everything is a link on that site. And it hasn’t been updated since August of 2003 – yikes! And did I mention that it’s slow?
Sorry guys, but I’m not expecting Direct Hit to turn Saint Dragon into a worldwide success. I think it’s time to head back to the studio and get a more talented songwriter in tow and a style all your own.
