Modus Dei
Legend of Rome

Check out Modus Dei

Genre: Christian Alternative Rock

By: Talon Karrde

Modus Dei - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED     I've never been much of a fan of Christian Rock. I mean, some of it isn’t half bad, but much of it sort of forces the Lord’s message down your throat (When you are force-fed this stuff, it kind of turns you off to the message altogether). So, I wasn’t really sure I would enjoy Legend of Rome by Modus Dei. To be quite honest, the only reason I really wanted to check out this CD was the name of the group, Modus Dei. I mean, honestly, it’s a pretty cool name. It’s Latin for “God’s Rhythm” and very original sounding. The group hails from Southern California and has been around since 1997, touring nationally and delivering their take on the Good News.

When, I poped this CD in I was immediately drawn in by the amazing music. I mean – wow! What a great combination of guitars and drums, exactly what an alternative rock band should sound like and more. The singing, guess what, was not half bad. Cary Jun Hokama, the lead singer, has an interesting voice. He excels on some tracks, but shows his youth in others. With a little polishing, I’m sure he’ll radiate as the front man of this band.

Now for the song titles and lyrics – I really have no complaints on that score either. The average person would never have a clue as to what type of music this was by reading the song titles. In other words, the Lord’s message isn’t shoved down your throat as soon as you read the track listings. I have to say that the lyrics were well written. Fans of Christian rock will love the way Modus Dei spreads the word. Fans of alternative rock will find similarities to P.O.D. of old. My favorite songs are Breathing In and New Generation. Excerpt from New Generation: A generation lost is the name they gave us / Seems the days of peace and love are over / Waiting for tomorrow – only hope left / Take a look around and see / Are we really that lost generation? / Can’t we be the new inspiration?

Now, even though I’ve only listed two songs as my favorite, you have to know that I spent my time re-listening to this CD at least four times, just because I wanted to. I found myself drumming my desk to the beats and nodding my head to the music. I think everyone will find something to like in Modus Dei’s music. Check out their website, where you can listen to a couple of their songs and see if you don’t agree.

And it seems that congratulations are in order for Modus Dei! They hit the airwaves all across America on November 17, 2003. You can call your local Christian radio station and request Modus Dei to show your well-deserved support. And look for the CD - you won’t be disappointed.
