Cute! Cute! Cute! My goodness, from the moment I laid eyes on Lydia, the Little Dead Riding Hood, I nearly cried. Lydia, with her round Green face had me; I wanted T-shirts, desktop pictures and more! I hadn’t even read the story and I declared myself a life long fan. However, the story itself is another story.
Little Dead Riding Hood is based loosely on the German fairy tale, as Lydia is sent to bring goodies to her grandmother. However, before leaving, her mother warned her NOT to look in the basket. As Lydia walks cheerfully through the forest a host of cute characters with ugly spirits plot to steal her basket. From the blond winged bat demon girl Demona to Stitch (a goofy knock off of the Pillsbury Doughboy) and partner Guff (a goofy muscle clad Leprechaun); each has some not nice plans to thwart Lydia’s visit.
However, Lydia is lucky to have a host of equally cute friends like Skeet a gothic rock type-mime. Yes, if you haven’t guessed, Little Dead Riding Hood is definitely a gag comic; I mean there is a turtle with a human head and humongous teeth and Lydia’s grandmother is an ape! Unfortunately the flow of this story is just all wrong. Nothing connects this great plot and characters.
Still, Simon Adams has one heck of a great character property. Fans of Hello Kitty, Emily the Strange, and Living Dead Dolls would no doubt fall in love with Lydia. He just needs to keep himself as the artists and hire someone to write the stories and all will be right in my world. Lydia deserves better, let’s give that to her ok?
