Somewhere in a Bargain Bin 7

Dwele
Subject

Distributed by Virgin Records

Genre: R&B/Nu Soul

By: Jon Minners

Dwele - COPYRIGHT VIRGIN RECORDS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED     Hold up! I’m choking on my own vomit. Yeah, it’s because I am just recovering from pneumonia and this CD just set me back a week. Why do they even bother putting out this crap? It’s a shame, because I have been really enjoying the music that Virgin Records has been putting out, but I guess for every seven good CDs, you get the one that loses money and forces CD prices to go up (not downloading music, although no one has to worry about piracy with this CD). Dwele’s Subject would have trouble selling in a bargain bin. I don’t think Columbia House could sell this even if they were offering a “buy one CD, get three more for a penny” special.

Dwele means well. The producer/singer/instrumentalist has a nice voice and is trying to bring together R&B, spoken word, jazz and hip hop, but he really fails. His music is just boring and slow. There is some groove to it, but the lyrics are really missing a lot, enough to have me using this CD to hold my morning cup of coffee. I don’t even drink coffee in the morning, but I felt bad for the dust collecting on this CD that I took up the habit so it could get some use.

Claiming to have been influenced by Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder and more modern hit makers like a Tribe Called Quest, Dwele instead provides a perfect example of how treat your teachers with great disrespect. Unlike Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Dewle's songs you will not remember forever and want to play at your wedding. I just called, to say…Your CD sucks. And the music doesn’t have that modern feel that makes you remember the days with a special girls like Keith Sweat or Montell Jordan’s music did. You got me Twisted…in my bathroom?

The fact of the matter is, Virgin Records may love this Dewle and people may like his music, but it doesn’t mean I have to and since I don’t, I warn you all to stay away from Subject, unless you suffer from bulimia or need to induce illness. Buddy, find your own style, that's what made your mentors great!
