Random Acts of Surfing For October 2000

WWF.com

Random acts of surfing really aren't random at all. I have a method to my madness. Last month, after my cohort in crime wrote a piece politely insulting the new Backstreet Boys Project at StanLee.net, I thought I'd give the site a try and let you all know what I thought. This month, after Badseed reviewed the WWF Royal Rumble game, and after writing my Minners' Commentary Corner I decided to check out a wrestling site. I decided why not check out the top wrestling promotion's site to find out if they were indeed on top of the web game as they are in the sports entertainment.

The site, WWF.com, is definitely ahead of the game. They have definitely done their research and the site reflects this. So many things to offer that you'd think their page would be extremely cluttered, but it isn't.

WWF.com has a nice splash page usually advertising some major event within their company. Click on the big picture to enter a well laid out site using some pretty nice colors. Lots of black, and either green or red pinstripes that don't obscure your vision at all, really making this page stand out.

Each subsection of the site is visible on the main page. For example, place your pointer on the news subsection and a drop down menu appears showcasing each link that subsection has to offer, from headlines to commentary and the famed Ross Report. Most pages also showcase a quick link table that takes you to such sites as WWF Vote,WWF NY,XFL and more. There is a poll for you to participate in and the video of the day, usually showcasing an exiting moment from one of their shows, to view. All this and amazingly, the site is not cluttered. Everything is well placed with the proper amount of space in between everything to make it easier on the eyes.

Now, the WWF did some major research here and it really shows. Most sections, not all, but most, contain barely any scrolling. You do not have to scroll much to the bottom of an article or from left to right to see everything. If a story has a lot to say, it will be cut evenly to 2, 3 or more pages (they let you know how many pages there are), so that most of each page fits right on your screen. I hate having to scroll, so right away, this site kicks ass. Notice a similar aspect with a certain e-zine named BANDWIDTH?

The headlines page is nice and contains quick bits on important stories. Commentary pieces are always cool, because speaking your mind just kicks extreme ass. (Cheap plug here; my wrestling commentary can be seen at Wrestleview.com). Anyways, under each WWF Commentator, there is an envelope with a link so that you can e-mail them. Some pages on the site I recommend:

The only sites that annoy me are the chat and trivia sites that take too long to come up and are too aggravating to even check out. Still, these sites are just small potatoes when you look at the big picture. WWF.com is a tremendous site. It looks incredible, is user-friendly and more often than not, the site quickly downloads for fast viewing. The site itself is chock full of information and if you go to WWF Divas, full of hot WWF ladies, too. Oh, you can also visit the Rock's page, Stone Cold's page and other mini-web pages within the main WWF page. With so much at your fingertips, the WWF site will keep you busy for days.

Many times, a successful company falters when they try to channel that success to the web. Not only has the WWF achieved success on the web, they have excelled. For comments or questions about this article please e-mail me at Jminners@ybfree.com. Peace...
