Liquid Gang: A Solid Act

Listen to Liquid Gang at GothamRecords.com

By: Jon Minners

Liquid Gang has made a name for Liquid Gangthemselves with a reputation stemming from previous independent releases. Now, this Philadelphia band brings their form of no-holds-barred, anything goes style of music to mainstream audiences with their latest Lava/Atlantic (Editor's Note 2004: Liquid Gang is now on Gotham Records) are now release, entitled Sunshine.

It is kind of funny that they would title their album, Sunshine, when so many of the words seem so bleak. Doesn't look like they have much sunlight shining down on them at all. Their lives seem so melodramatic, but that always makes for some good music.

Liquid Gang is a rather intriguing group. Fortunately for them, they get past their first song, which I felt was weak and put on a great performance throughout the rest of the CD. The second song, Closer, starts getting the listener into the CD with words like I never thought I could be so blind and the future looks bleak. Cool. I love a good, dark song. And one of those songs turns out to be one of the best songs on the CD. Rain discusses pain, sin and sadness. Help me get rid of this cloud over my head/Here comes the rain, down on my head again/washing me clean, calming me down. This song seems to be about absolution of sin, a wakeup call of sorts. Of course, this all makes for a great song.

Now the best song on the CD is Blunt Force. This song reminds me of Papa Roach. Jose Maldonado, who is the lead vocalist for this group, really gets the job done on this song. It's kind of like rap-rock and Maldonado is in excellent form with his haunting, exhilarating voice, fast paced verses, slow chorus, and excellent music. Besides his intense voice, Blunt Force contains riffs like rat-ta-tat-tat. The whole song provides such an adrenaline rush. This is what makes Liquid Gang a force to be reckoned with and a star on the rise. Some songs do fall short of greatness, but the others songs more than make up for this, making Liquid Gang a ray of Sunshine on the rock industry.
