DTJ~Real*MC: This Close to Stardom

By: Jon Minners

Normally, I review CD's, but being that this is YBFREE.com, where we review the unknown, I thought I'd give MP3.com a try. I thought maybe I could help discover another star or something. I found DTJ~Real*MC, a real interesting rapper from the mid-west. DTJ~Real*MC says his music is unlike anyone else's and one listen can tell you he is correct.

DTJ is a freestyling rapper, who has a list of songs on MP3.com as well as a CD for sale. He has the phat beats, and he spouts out some good rhymes, but his voice isn't smooth and he needs the help of a major production team if he wants to make it big. That isn't an insult, because I see some potential.

I made an effort to listen to everything on his MP3 site. Each one shares a common attribute. They all have killer beats that you don't hear everywhere else. Syntax, another MP3.com artists, is the man responsible for the beats behind the words. Now the words are what I have a problem with. Some of the rhymes sound nice. He has the rap thing down, but some of his words are real amateurish. He sounds like a smart rapper, but then dumbs his own skills down with the use of curses and other profanity when it is not necessary. Cursing for the sake of cursing isn't as cool as many people think. Besides that, his lyrics are a little weak. DTJ could use the help of a writer, but when you think of the fact that he is a freestyler, DTJ is pretty good. It is hard to come up with a rap on the spur of the moment and these songs have that kind of feel. Maybe that means if he took some time, he would sound even better. Right now, I can't see him overtaking Jay-Z on the top of the hip-hop charts, but give this guy a writer and some studio cleanup, and anything is possible.

I definitely enjoyd Rad, which contained a human beat box sound that brought me back to yesteryear. Maybe he can use this more often, giving him an old school niche. I also enjoyed Nuggs featuring another MP3 artists known as Paul the Ass(who is 15 years old), which is pretty catchy and contains such lines as MP3.com Master/Stream all night long/Never napping on Napster. Pretty cool. Get this DTJ even has a rival on MP3 known as Lil T, who he rips apart in one of his songs.-Doesn't every big star need a rival?

DTJ is definitely raw, but he has a good head for the rap game, a great beat behind his music, and some untapped talent that a good producer may be able to get out of him. With that in mind, DTJ has represented and may have a future ahead of him.
