I wasn't too jazzed about listening to this CD when I first received it. The cover photo was a throw back to the country music album covers of old. I figured I was in for a twangy lost-my-man-lost-my-job-lost-my-dog-boo-hoo sort of compilation. And while a couple of tracks on Just Gonna Think About Today are a little like that, the rest of the CD is actually rather interesting.
Carol Selick, a native of New Jersey, has an excellent singing voice, very suited for country as well as jazz. She reminds me of my favorite country singers - Brenda Lee and Patsy Cline. Carol actually started her career as a country singer, but expanded her tastes after meeting Rose Marie McCoy, who enjoys writing credits on one of the CD's tracks, Let Me Bring Out The Animal In You. McCoy has written for some fairly famous veteran singers, such as Ray Charles and Elvis.
Let Me Bring Out The Animal In You and A Drop In The Ocean are my favorite tracks on this CD. Let Me Bring Out The Animal In You is a sassy sort of love song and A Drop In The Ocean is your average sappy country love song. A Life To Remember is also a pretty decent track that includes a soulful blending of back-up vocals added to Selick's own beautiful voice.
And of course, there are the obligatory old fashioned country songs as well, such as How Much Time: "He's sort of young - he's only twenty-four / He's sort of young - he's much too young for her / She's forty plus - A woman in her prime / But she loves him, she really loves him / How much time? How much time? How much time?" I got a pretty decent laugh out of the lyrics on that one.
All-in-all, I have to say that I enjoyed this CD. Yes, it does have the country music twangy feel, but it's not an annoying country whining type of album. And that voice - excellent! After listening to Carol Selick's debut CD, I have the confidence to say that Selick will definitely be going places in the world of country music.
