Phillip Kane and Ennui: Media Gurls

By: Talon Karrde

I should have realized what I was getting into with this CD when I read the PR notes: Philip Kane was the singer in a group called Ennui. Ennui made a single….It got good reviews. No one bought it.” “…[the band] changed their name to Avalanche. They released an album…No one bought it.” “Philip continued to make music…he made demos. No one heard them.” Well, guess what? I just listened to Media Gurls by Philip Kane and I understand why!

This CD contains four tracks: two sung by Philip Kane alone and two by Philip Kane when he was with Ennui. Now, I must be honest – Philip Kane has an amazing voice. Kane reminds me of David Bowie a bit. He could even be the next lead singer of Nickelback, but he’s not and his music is not even close to being on par with either Bowie or Nickelback.

Media Gurls is purely a hateful piece. Check out this very thought provoking line from I Need You to Hate Me - "I need you to fuck me up!” Or how about the truly inspirational lyrics found in the track Tittybar“Mary she was working at a tittybar - boom titty boom titty boom boom boom - I tried to tell her I was a famous rock star - boom titty boom titty boom boom boom - she said in that case I guess I'll have to charge you double. It's the second time this week my pretentiousness has cost me....me money.” Need I say more?

This CD was truly painful to listen to and there were only four tracks! “No one bought it.” As they say, history tends to repeat itself. This one doesn’t even deserve a place in the bargain bins. Run, as far and as fast as you can!
