Mr. Vein sounds like an interesting name for a rock band, especially for one toted as “…one of the freshest and powerful sounds in the North…” (John Layman – Frostbite Music Festival 2000). Mr. Vein consists of guitarist Tom Inglis, bass guitarist and vocalist Tim Naylor, and drummer Dan Dunphy. The band hales from Canada and has been receiving play at several stations.
So, I figured I’d check out their album, No Big Deal. The riffs on the first track, Kiss My Heart, made me grin. I’m a sucker for a good guitar. Unfortunately, the voice of Tim Naylor turned me off. It was like listening to Tom Jones singing a song by The Doors or Led Zepplin. I enjoyed the music immensely. In fact, turn off the voice, and I would have probably been very pleased with the album.
The lyrics, when read, were pretty good. “You’re always on the run. That’s how you get your fun. Living on the edge of time. She’s on fire. She’s my desire. She’s on fire. I can’t deny her.” – Fire. While quite clearly excellent examples of classic rock, I had to laugh when I read who penned them, no other than Mr. Naylor! Who indeed is a rather talented guitarist and lyricist, forums he should consider sticking with.
In all, I would like to see this album revamped. Find a singer with a harder, harsher voice. Someone who has the stones to belt out this music, not someone more suited to piano lounge singing. Until then this is a bargain-bin album for sure. As far as I’m concerned, No Big Deal is an apt title for Mr. Vein’s first album.
