Art from Dark Days Copyright IDW Publishing ALL RIGHTS RESERVED     Vampires are just awesome! Lestat and the Vampire Chronicles, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Vampire Hunter D; you name it; if it involves vampires I enjoy it. When I heard that IDW Publishing was creating a new series involving bloodsuckers, I jumped at it and as expected, I was not disappointed. Alex Garner and IDW Publishing have created an awesome vampire tale with a unique and intriguing twist.

CVO: (Covert Vampiric Operations) is about a group of vampires who work for a top-secret branch of the CIA. Members of the team are brought together when their real human lives mean nothing anymore. Their skills are needed and enhanced as they are brought over to the world of darkness. Together, the CVO deals with the most dangerous worldwide threats using their vampire powers for the greater good of Earth. Working together as a team, the group bands together like a coven to battle everyone from human terrorists to demons and other members of the occult.

The first graphic novel features the agency as they tackle General Malodor, a tyrant with a taste for destruction. Malodor has gotten his hands on Soviet nukes and has even found a way to deliver them via a melding of ancient artifacts and ultra-modern technology. Basically, this means, that Malodor could just transport a nuclear bomb briefcase right into the White House, more specifically the office of the President. Fighting an enemy in a tale strangely familiar, almost mirroring a recent conflict, sans the science fiction and the fact that in this tale, the weapons of mass destruction actually exist, Cross, Bools and Britt, among other vampires try to avert the nuclear disaster with the help of Overmars, CVO Director and Nikodemus, a demon advisor, familiar with the demon mafia who play an intricate role in this latest threat.

Nothing is as it seems to be and while the vampires fight for the good of the world, the government they are fighting for may not be as good as they think. What secrets are they hiding from the vampires about their human pasts? With so many kinds of demons and other creatures of the night to explore as well as the dangers within, IDW Publishing looks to have a winner on its hands.

If you already haven’t discovered CVO, you really need to check out what you have been missing. CVO is a great story dripping with descriptive and beautiful color artwork. The tale is also very well written interweaving the fictitious demon world with a world of governmental affairs we know all too well. Lots of action combined with interesting ways of using demon and vampire powers combines the stories of the occult with those of the X-Files and Alias, making this comic book one to sink your teeth into. Just don’t get any blood on the carpet.
