Anya (played by Emma Caulfield), the vengeance demon that the gang picked up when she was forced to become human, had the most dramatic closure. The strangely literal ex-demon constantly struggled to gain an understanding of humanity as well as a mortality that she had never been in the position to face. What better way to understand death than to die willingly so that another may live. Anya's death showed that she had truly grown to understand and cherish humanity.
Giles, Buffy's watcher (played by Anthony Stewart Head), her father figure throughout the series had his greatest fear that he would have to watch Buffy die, and he did, once. But his greatest hope was that he could let her rest. Now he can.
Spike, Faith, and Andrew (played by James Marsters, Eliza Dushku, and Tom Lenk, respectively), spent their runs on the series as evil, at first, and then in the search for redemption which they finally got—some more than others.
The finale also managed to tie up the two most controversial relationships among Buffy fans. In the finale, Angel (played by David Boreanaz) comes to help Buffy in this huge battle she is facing. The relationship between these two characters began from the very first episode, and while the conversation between the two did add more complications to an already complex relationship, it also gave fans of the relationship plenty of closure. We are told that Buffy still loves Angel. Buffy tells him that one day, when she's ready, she will come for him, and that's enough for him. After all, as he says, the vampire with a soul is not getting any older.
The relationship between Buffy and the only other vampire with a soul, Spike also receives some treatment. For one, Spike showed that, unlike Angel, he could be a damn good sport. He loves Buffy and continues to be kind to her despite the kiss she shared with Angel. He dies for her, and we see that she does truly love him as well. Maybe on different levels, but she does love them both.
So, with Buffy the Vampire Slayer gone, what do us Joss
fans have to look forward to? With the shows' spin-off going into its fifth year on the WB this fall, the possibility that some characters from Buffy may show up on the show has not been disregarded. Spike, who dies at the end of the finale, has even been signed on to Angel as a series regular for next season. Sarah Michelle Gellar has even declared that she will appear in a couple of Angel episodes. As for buzz surrounding a new spin-off, with Dushku taking the lead role in the coming fall series Tru Calling, all hopes have been dashed. But that’s okay…there’s always the confirmed possibility of a new Buffy feature film in the not so distant future. And for most of the fans, that’s enough.
