1. What is the name of The Square Egg's current album?
The name of our current album is Quite Possibly The Best Of The Square Egg and we decided to name it that because we feel it is a nice introduction to the music we have recorded over the last few years. It serves as a 12 song sampler of our over all sound. People that listen to it can get a brief taste of our varying styles.
2. Which musical acts have inspired The Square Egg?
We are inspired by a variety of musical acts as well as our own life experiences. Because there are 10 of us it would be impossible to fairly represent our musical tastes.
We feel that music is essentially music. The only defining factor that we live by is that of making good music. As far as genres goes that can come in any form and as artists we are inspired by good music as well as our experiences in life and being together as a band you learn and share musical wealth with each other.
3. Which track is your favorite and why?
My personal favorite is a song called "?" The actually chorus is simply the word love harmonized. I enjoy it for its simplicity and beauty and the theme of the song. During the bridge we recorded some of our friends answering what the word love means to them. To that degree I feel that it is a very powerful and honest song. I still enjoy listening to it even today.
4. What has been the most difficult incident The Square Egg has experienced?
The most difficult incident that I have been faced with as a musician is actually an ongoing struggle in the music industry. Life has been good. Performing has been good. But the only thing that has presented any sort of obstacle or struggle is that of getting press and other tastemakers to not categorize our music. We think music serves its most honest nature if you allow those who appreciate it to do so without judgement and let the music speak for itself outside of genres and demographic breakdowns. There are simply too many nuances and elements to our music for it to speak to one audience. In reality our ideal listener is someone with a mature musical taste who can jump from Young Jeezy to Annie Defranco and to Talking Heads and back without blinking an idea. Music simply is and should be without some preconceived notion of how it should fit into formats.
5. Describe two qualities The Square Egg fans love about the music?
What I think people who appreciate our music love about it most is that it can speak to them on a lot of levels. We are real people making music for other people. At the end of the day we want to connect to listeners and have them feel something - whether that be love, happiness or anger or any other range of emotion. We believe that folks dig our musical honesty.
The other quality that folks dig most is the ability to see us put on a great show. We put thought into how we want to perform live and each time we play we approach the show with an energy and enthusiasm that comes across in our performance. I think people appreciate getting their money's worth from our live show. I think they appreciate seeing us enjoy what we do no matter how many times we do it. That is something that translates to them and allows them to be a part of the process and in that moment with us sharing that experience.
6. How do you feel The Square Egg has contributed to the evolution of the band's genre(s) of music?
I wouldn't feel genuine in saying we have made any contribution to the evolution of music. Maybe in some posthumous way if we look back at these questions and answers when I am dead or retired we can see if The Square Egg left a mark. But for now we are enjoying the journey and taking things as they come. Time will tell.
7. If you could have one track on your current album be the theme to a movie or TV show which would you pick and why?
If I could pick on track off of our current able to be a television or movie theme I would have to say A Place Called Ted's. It's a very narrative song and each time I hear it I can vividly imagine the story in my mind as it's been told in the song.
8. How many people have a song by The Square Egg on their MySpace Profile?
I wouldn't know exactly how many folks have our songs featured in their profiles. I know of at least two people since they are both real friends of ours. Of the current songs on our profile A Place Called Ted's would probably be the most added.
9. Are your parents fans of The Square Egg?
Our parents appreciate of our music because they enjoy the songs in general. They are able to appreciate the idea of us expressing our thoughts and being entertaining without being offensive. They like that they can listen to our music with children and their friends and not be embarrassed or have to make excuses for our language. That's not to say that we are a "Mickey Mouse band." It's to say that they can connect to it on a lot of levels because it reminds them of the music that they grew up listening to.
10. Tell us a rumor (real or fake) that you think would garner your musical genius massive news coverage.
If it ever got out that I had bionic powers that would help to catapult The Square Egg into a media frenzy. But in order to have folks focus on our music and performances more we keep that under raps. I hope that we can trust you with this secret.
