You know that feeling when you need $3 and you think about things you wasted it on? Well, when I need $3 and I don't have it, because I wasted my money on DC Comics Big Daddy Danger. And damn it! I really wanted to like this title, but I just couldn't. I love wrestling and I had hopes that this would be a tale similar to Masters of the Ring, but instead I got a really bad joke-the over-hyped Big Daddy Danger.
The story begins with Big Daddy Danger winning a wrestling match and retaining his championship. His son loves watching his dad win the big match, but unbeknownst to him, his father's wrestling abilities have landed Danger another job. The world champion is also protector of the world and must leave at a moment's notice to save it. Of course, he can't tell his son, who just wants to spend some quality time with his father. Danger knows his status and jobs are destroying his family, however he must suppress his pain and continue on heroic acts like rescuing the Big City's Mayor and daughter who have been kidnapped.
Of course, what would any superhero be without an archenemy? Danger has Diablo X, a nasty dude bent on destroying the famed wrester. Not much is actually learned about Diablo X, other than the fact that he seems to be the mastermind behind all of Big Daddy Danger's problems. We only get a glimpse of him once, and the fact that he is behind a mask, too, makes it even harder. Ooh, could he be related to the hero in some way?
Ok, I know it is a comic book, but I was just baffled at how Danger has time to wrestle and fight crime. Hell, The Rock can't even film a movie without leaving the squared circle for umpteenth months. I'm sorry I just could not suspend my disbelief with this comic. And just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, Danger's son tries to emulate his father, by wearing a mask and performing his father's signature moves during an amateur wrestling match. And they allow him to compete and win! You shouldn't write a comic about wrestling if you DO NOT know the difference between amateur and professional wrestling!!!
What is most even scarier is that Disney has decided to create a movie based on this character. Why? I beg Disney NO! This tale doesn't deserve to be in the theatres. It doesn't deserve to be in the comic shops. Wrestling deserves better than this.
