No, YU-GI-OH! The Movie is not available here in the West,
unless you have connections up the kazoo (like myself). So fans of the series are just going to have to wait a little bit longer in order to view this little flick. But fear not, YBFREE.com has an EXCLUSIVE review of this motion picture.
Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie is not based around the dark adventures on our beloved hero but rather his young neighbor Shogo. Shogo is a weak Duelist deathly (LITERALLY) afraid of losing-ok, he is just a whiny spoiled loser. So, when he a mysterious creepy old woman gives him a Red Eyes Black Dragon card (which has equal strength and power to the Blue Eyes White Dragon), he feels that he is a winner and STILL refuses to play because he knows he will win with his new card. Yes, folks this definitely Kodomo (child's anime).
Meanwhile, Kaiba, everyone's favorite bad-guy-in-residence, is still longing to be the ultimate player of Duel Monsters and opens a Duel Monsters Center so that he can collect the names of all the players along with their decks. Kaiba's goal is to steal cards by coordinating a tournament, aptly named Duel Monsters Elimination Tournament. Each time a player wins, that player is allowed to choose one card from their losing opponents deck.
When Kaiba, learns of Shogo's little treasure, he sends one of his henchmen to retrieve it. Jounouchi and Yugi try to stop the attack but end up beaten, with Yugi additionally being mugged of his Eye of Horace Pendant. Needless to say, its now so on!
However, there is one problem with the Red Eyes Black Dragon Card. The strength of this card lies in its potential (or strategy) of the player. It does not guarantee any victories on its face value alone. You know a moral note had to be included in this anime...it's not all mayhem.
The coolest part of this film was definitely the Tournament scenes. Duel Monster Cards are held in devices connected to one's hand. The card characters are then virtually projected so that they may battle with one another. Of course everyone's favorite card characters are present from the Blue Eyes White Dragon, to the Magician's Magical Silk Hat.
Now I could give away the ending, but I won't do that. What I will tell you is expect nothing really of the animation in this movie; it is exactly like that of the series. The story, I felt was a cliché, atypical moral, good versus bad, looser learns how to be a winner, story. I felt the movie needed one of Yugi's dark revenge plots to teach cheaters a lesson. Usually, I like a change of pace in a story line, but this one did no justice to the series. Kaiba is always being taught a lesson; I wanted something a little more spectacular for a movie. HOWEVER, the battles during the Duel Monsters Elimination Tournament are totally worth seeing this movie for, but maybe not on the big screen. It is not worth the long lines or the money.
