YBFREE.com has covered extensively the animated battle between the Autobots and Decepticons which stretches from the US to Japn. Now, the good guys led by Optimus Prime, and the Decepticons, the bad guys led by Megatron, wages new
battles in a brand new comic brought to life by Pat Lee and the upstart Dreamwave Productions.
I had to get this comic as soon as I heard it was coming out and I was very happy that I did. A beautiful cover with Megatron in the front and his whole elite squadron on the back page invite the reader to a cornucopia of beautifully rendered colorful images on the inside. An awesome display of detailed imagery brings to life the larger than life robots that can transform from vehicles to awesome creatures of immense power and destructive force. Fantastic backgrounds, comprehensive and distinct characters and wonderful use of brilliant colors is just one great property of this gorgeous new series that is fully complimented with a story of immense depth that will leave you wanting more.
The story starts immediately with action as two unsuspecting men are stomped and destroyed by the powerful force of Megatron. The reader is then transported to the home of Spike, who grew up with the Autobots and is now much older. Military personnel, who want to discuss with him events from the past, greet him at his home. The Autobots had defeated the Decepticons with the help of the humans. Agreeing to go back to their home of Cybertron, Earth created a huge ship called the Ark II, named in honor of the ship the Transformers arrived in. The Autobots brought seven humans with them to their home world, but a horrible crash killed everyone and everything inside. Spike's father Sparkplug was on board that ship and now three years later, the government has come to Spike and the youngster had no choice but to come along.
As this goes on, a man named Lazarus is secretly leading a freedom fighter named Bishop to a bunker for unknown purposes. Lazarus intrigues the freedom fighter with thoughts of an army that doesn't need weapons, because they are weapons themselves. Bishop is led into a room where he is confronted by the menacing appearance of Megatron. Lazarus assures Bishop that he controls Megatron and a host of other Transformers, but when he tells Megatron to bow before him, the huge Decepticon leader doesn't comply. As this goes on, Spike soon discovers that Megatron is alive and that many of the Transformers may not have been killed in the crash. The government knows that they have a serious threat to deal with and inform Spike that they have a Transformer of their own. Spike comes face to face with Optimus Prime as the story ends.
Wow! This book just leapt off the pages and it felt like the Transformers never went away. What a great way to continue a series and what a great way to get the reader into this new comic. And the second issue has even more drama and action. Now, this series is only six issues in length, but there is a lot more to come. Soon, Transformers: Armada will begin, bringing a new look to Optimus Prime, Megatron and all the other Transformers that will coincide with a brand new cartoon series and toy line, making all of us forget about that cheaply made, hokey Japanese anime version of the Transformers that hit the airwaves this past fall. With great artwork, a great story, and wonderful writing The Transformers: Generation I brings back the old boys in a big way!!
