This comic is so good! I have only read two issues and I am totally in love with the main character, a bumbling kleptomaniac named Jax. But before I get too far ahead of myself, let me give you a little background on Quicken Forbidden.
Basically, the series is a fantasy series. It is based around my girl Jax. Jax or Jacqueline Epoch is a bit of a nerd. She has a delinquent for a boyfriend and her parents are divorced, so she is not too happy with her life. Jax's life changes dramatically after she follows a rabbit through an inter-dimensional portal into the Realmsend. While exploring the dimension, Jax comes across several very powerful mystical items, which included a suit of armor and an ancient book of magical wisdom. Jax, of course intrigued, borrows them with the full intent of returning them as soon as she was done. Unfortunately, when Jax returned to her reality things were, let's just say, a little screwed up. Somehow, her little visit caused a leak into Jax's reality, resulting in all kinds of havoc. For instance, Dragons now fly over Manhattan, killer plants reside in her neighbors apartment, and Jax Landlord is now a Dolphin.
The rip in the space-time continuum is only part of the problem. Apparently, several organizations have been trying to perfect inter-dimensional travel and one group even sent a robot named A.M. in to gather data. When this group finds out about Jax's adventure, they ask her to cross over again and bring him back. Only problem is, she does not just bring back A.M. Jax decides to borrow a Collapsible Cup which just so happens to be the residence of a destructive and evil creature called the Quicken. The Quicken, upon entering reality, becomes a snake and heads into the deepest realms of the New York City sewer system. Needless to say, many people are not too happy with Jax and her klepto issues.
I really like this comic. Not just because a girl is the main character but because she is a real girl, no big boobed, ultra thin, eye candy. Jax is a short, red head girl, with glasses. Her beauty is there but she doesn't really acknowledge it. She wears baggy clothes and loves to read fantasy books. Jax is so much like many of the girls who are comic fans. And what adds to her charm is that she is a damn fool with serious theft issues. I am sorry I only had the pleasure of reading two of the series comics (Trial Separation Part 1 of Three and Issue 11) each far apart from each other in story. But some how, it didn't matter because the creators of this comic did such a good job it is hardly noticeable to a new reader that they are picking up the story from the middle.
I think what really brought me into this comic was that the art and story are reminiscent to that of the Tick (one of the few American comics I collect with a passion). Though the story seems shallow and the black and white artwork stereotypically comic, there is something deep and profound going on and one can't help being dragged in.
I promise you that anyone who picks up Quicken Forbidden will not be disappointed. I'm sorry I waited this long to get into the series! I'm like a fiend on Ebay trying to locate older issues. I hope a trade paperback is in the works (hint, hint)! Really, DO NOT forbid yourself from this series quickly, go and get it!!!
