State of Emergency

By: Badseed

This game was a whole lot of fun to play. It sold out way too fast and if it wasn't for Toys R' Us actually enforcing their ID Check I would not have gotten myself a copy. However, after playing for a few hours, I was just a tad upset that I allowed myself to get so crazy over this game. State of Emergency really lived off of the hype of Grand Theft Auto 3, and failed to live up to its expectations.

Why this game was fun: Well, it is a mix of all our childhood favorites like Streets of Rage, Double Dragon and all those other side scrolling fun games only better. The worlds are huge and there are over 250 characters on the screen at once. That means 249 people's asses to kick! You can deliver a world of hurt to your enemies with weapons from guns to swords and furniture. Hell, if you cut someone's head off with a sword, you can use that head to beat on your opponents with!

This game is just one big riot. Your mission: to take down the man and get your point across so that The Corporation does not control the people with their evil ways. This means, kicking their butts, but keeping away from hurting civilians. So, if you are like me, you had a lot of fun hurting civilians, too.

The Bad: The missions suck. They get too repetitive and there are only so many times I can escort the leader of the resistance, or whoever he is, to safety before finding things to be too damn redundant. Add to the frustration that looks good but is actually too much trouble to enjoy from start to finish. How would you feel if you have to escort someone to safety against hundreds of baddies and you end up kicking so much butt that you are sure you will win, only to have one guy get through (which always happens) who kills the guy you are trying to protect?

Quick Result: This game should have been all about kicking ass and fighting big time bosses to take control away from The Corporation. While I was happy with some of the game play overall, State of Emergency put me in a State of Anger.
