Max Payne starts out with the lead character, a cop, coming home to discover that his wife and his baby have been killed by the Mafia. His cover blown and his partner killed, the mafia are after him and now, the police are after him. He must go through the streets, the subways and the Mafia hideouts, to find clues and discover who is really behind the death of those closest to him.
This is definitely for the mature audience and plays like a gritty action movie . Actually, this is a mystery graphic
novel and each cut scene represents another page of this comic book. It kicked ass! The best part of it all is the fact that you can slow down the game for short periods of time, so you can dodge a barrage of bullets like in the Matrix.
All the gimmicks aside, this game is pure fun to play. There are bad guys all over the place so you have to watch yourself at every corner. Each bad guy looks different and each room you have to explore contains a lot of clues and are wonderfully detailed with televisions that work, toilets that flush and walls that get shot up with holes. Everything is a target and you have to look carefully, because your way out may lie in the canister of gas you have to shoot from a safe distance. The graphics are awesome, the gameplay is expansive and the story is top notch. I have never played a game in my life this intense! It's way better on the PC where it isn't watered down, so ignore the commercials for the X-Box and PS2 versions unless you don't have a top notch computer.
This is truly the greatest game every created. If you don't find yourself up until 4 o'clock in the morning glued to your computer screen, jumping at the slightest sound of someone walking up behind you, then you don't know what fun is. Go to your store, look past all the glitz and get a dose of Payne to the Max.
