"We often don’t get too much info until we get to the auditions," said Mandy Bonhomme. "You may know a little about the character, but you don’t get a script until you show up. Sometimes they’ll describe the character in terms of ‘she has a high voice or she is a tomboy character.’ Because it is an audio thing, the actor has more control. A voice is hard to describe, so you try different tones to see what works. They will allow you to try the character with several voices."
Bonhomme, a New York based actress has been voice acting for almost four years, known for her roles in Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie, The Slayers Next and Ayane’s High Kick. "I was at an audition and people there were talking about Anime," she says on how she got into the field. "I thought that it would be really fun to do and I was a fan of some Anime films. I really enjoy some of the stories. They are a perfect blend of reality and fantasy. I would love to do movies, but I am very happy with doing voice acting."
"My theatre work is totally separate," said Crispin Freeman. "I started voice acting to keep myself sane when I wasn’t doing theatre. I started getting into it more and became more excited at getting Captain Tylor than a role in the theatre. Fans come to my plats and other actors are shocked. I ask them, ‘Dude, don’t you have a fan club?’ I would like to do film, but if it was a choice between American Beauty or a voice in Princess Mononoke, I’d pick Princess Mononoke."
Freeman is a well known voice actor, having done voices in The Slayers, The Slayers Next and the Slayers Try (Zelgadis), Revolutionary Girl Utena, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (Tylor) and Record of the Lodoss War, just to name a few. His talented voice acting abilities keep him getting a constant flow of work.
