     The
Guyver literally kicks ass. Ever since my friend told me how good it was, I felt like I was missing out on something. Fortunately at a recent convention, I was able to get a hold of the very first volume of the acclaimed mecha series by US Renditions (now MANGA Entertainment). After watching two episodes, I have decided to find the rest of the series and watch them all.
The show, like other anime series is about a teenage boy who accidentally finds himself in a precarious position. Sho Fukamachi is a normal high school kid whose whole life changes during a routine chat with Tetsuro, his friend, and brother to Mizuki, the love of his life. An explosion leads to the discovery of what is known as a Guyver Unit. There are only three units like this and Sho finds one of them. Unfortunately, despite the warnings of Tetsuro, Sho gets a little too close to the unit and his body is taken over by the strange contraption. He has now been transformed into Guyver 1.
The Guyver is a mysterious bio-booster armor of alien design. When it is activated, the unit interfaces with the human subject, transforming him into a superhuman warrior that little can stop. Chronos, a corporation that dabbles in underhanded deeds, had all three units, but when they were stolen, the organization has stopped short of nothing to recover the units. Including creating powerful monsters known as Zoanoids, which enable humans to transform into creatures up to 20 times as powerful.
This leads them to Sho, who destroys two Zoanoids when they attack his friend. In the second episode, Sho, in his new Guyver suit that seems to come to him when he needs it (kind of like the Hulk transformation), rips through two Zoanoids and then must get through what could be his final battle with Lisker, an agent from Chronos that now inhabits Guyver 2. The fight scenes are really cool. I mean, the Zoanoids do not provide much in the way of competition to Guyver, but the way Sho kills them is pretty cool. Sho actually rips the arms and breaks the neck of one, and blood comes spouting out of body parts.
This series is just phat. I hope the rest of the shows are as good and I plan on purchasing them. Once you have a taste, there is no going back. The story is really cool, with a nice budding romance brewing underneath the surface. Watching Sho cope with his new powers while trying to remain a good student, and the series' writers did a fantastic job depicting this dilemma. I also enjoyed the fact that after every episode, a small segment known as Chronos Zoanoid files is shown so that the audience gets to know a little background behind the creatures and Guyvers shown throughout each episode.
Love, friendship, insane action and some cool twists and turns you have to see to believe; aside from the crappy music, Guyver delivers and is a top-notch anime worth the watch (even the English dubbing is decent!). If you are a fan of mecha, you have to see this classic. Your collection is not complete without this blast from the past. My experience is not complete without the rest of this fine series. I highly recommend it.
