Stupid, childish, and completely whacked; these were the first three things that came to my mind while watching Tenshi ni Namoru at the 2001 Shoujocon. Tenshi ni Namoru is a strange mix of Urusei Yatsura (Lum*Urusei Yatsura), The Addams family and Tenchi Muyo! The series is about a demon with a halo named Noelle, who wants to become an angel to please her husband, a fourteen-year-old boy name Yuuske. But I must admit, despite my first impressions I have found myself completely addicted to this bizarre series.

Noelle and Yuusuke of 'Tenshi ni Namoru' or 'I Wanna Be An Angel' Copyright Sync-Point/Bandai/Heaven Project     The situation, upon which Yuuske met Noelle, is the age-old anime cliché of a young boy walking in on a naked girl. Yuusuke, on his way to school, happens to see a trail of schoolgirl clothes leading to a naked Noelle swimming. Upon seeing Yuusuke, she declares him her husband, and when Yuusuke gets home he finds his home replaced with a monstrous looking dollhouse full of strange in-laws. Noelle's family is a lovely assortment of demons; her father is a werewolf (he looks like Beast from the X-Men), and her mother and grandmother are witches. In addition to this, her eldest sister is an invisible woman, her brother a vampire, and her youngest sister an elf.

Most guys would love if a cute little pretty girl wanted to shack up with them, but not Yuusuke, primarily because his parents have just left the country and have left him to live all by himself in a nice big house. Also, Yuusuke is head over heels in love with his classmates, Natsumi. But to make matters worse, Lord Deli, a sinister looking thin thing with puffy sleeves wants to steal Noelle and make her a part of his large toy collection. Living with Lord Dispel is a doll like girl named Silky, which Dispel created for fun. Unfortunately, she is a zombie who only repeats everything Dispel says. Her role must be important in later episodes because she is in every episode.

Lord Deli will stop at nothing to get the sweet, dumb, and ever annoying Noelle. He sends all sorts of strange creatures including a balloon man who is just so ugly I can't describe him, and a demon cat (yes fans of cat girls here is another to add to your list), named Miruru, who is head over heals in love with Noelle's vampire brother.

Overall I encourage die-hard anime fans into anime no matter what genre, to check out this series. The animation is decent; it fits the teen angst, candy-coated evil plots that permeate throughout the series. The series is truly a grim fairy tale that I guarantee, if you give a chance, you will love!
